Site names the street with the ‘most outrageous’ holiday lights in each state. Here’s the one in Maine

The news and entertainment website 247WallSt.com has compiled a list of what it considers the neighborhood in each state where people can find the “most outrageous” holiday light displays.

Now, to be perfectly clear, 247WallSt.com is a website based out-of-state and it did not, as far as I can tell, deploy an army of Christmas judges to each of the 50 states to make detailed rankings of holiday lights.

We know how competitive this holiday decorating can get for some people, so please don’t take it personally if your street is supremely festive and was snubbed in this list of “most outrageous” lights.

For what it’s worth, 247WallSt.com came about its results by reviewing news stories, online photo galleries and, where they could find them, local light display awards.

In Maine, the winning neighborhood is Canterbury Road in Wells. As far as I can tell, this is because of the annual Norton Lights Christmas display, in which the Norton family at 213 Canterbury Road sets up an elaborate light show timed in sync with music to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Fund.

According to the Journal Tribune, the light show starts every night at 5 p.m. and lasts until 9 p.m. on weeknights, 10 p.m. on weekends.

From what I can tell based on previous reports, the Norton family display — which sprouted from a good-natured competition between Stan Norton and his brother over who could come up with the best light display — raises between $6,000 and $9,000 each year in donations for Make-A-Wish.

The Norton family has also reportedly dressed their property up for Halloween quite spectacularly. They take donations of food for the less fortunate around Halloween, however, and this year they collected about 1,200 pounds of food for the local food pantry.

Do you live a bit of a distance from Wells and want to see what the buzz is about? Check out the video below:

The website notes that the median home value in Wells is $285,300.

A few other particularly “outrageous” neighborhoods around the country this time of year are Pelham Road in Hudson, New Hampshire; the famous Dyker Heights in Brooklyn, New York; Oxnard Street and Lubao Avenue in Alameda, California; and Shady Oaks in little Lake Orion, Michigan.
