UMaine baseball players spoof ‘The Sandlot’ in their latest movie parody

Last spring, University of Maine baseball team put out a short parody of the movie “Bull Durham” — titled “Bear Durham” — earning the team much social media love and nearly 12,000 views on Facebook.

This year, they’ve outdone themselves, producing another hilarious short, this time spoofing on the 1993 coming-of-age baseball classic “The Sandlot.”

The Black Bears proudly present “The Snowlot” to raise interest in their upcoming season opener Friday at Clemson University in South Carolina, where the weather’s likely more hospitable to baseball at the moment.

The parody runs for about a minute and a half and focuses on the “Sandlot” scene in which the rag-tag group of protagonist friends has something of a territorial spat with a team of well-heeled rivals, trading childish insults.

Those well-heeled rivals are, of course, depicted as Clemson players.

As of this writing, “The Snowlot” has been viewed nearly 50,000 times in the two days since it was posted. As was the case when the team did its version of “Bull Durham,” many on the roster weren’t even born when “The Sandlot” was first released, but the film has built a cult following through replays on cable and DVD sales over the years, and today’s Black Bears were hilariously faithful to the original in their spoof.

We can’t wait until the baseball team does “The Natural” or a full-on “Field of Dreams.”
