A dirty line from the new Beyonce song is selling a ton of (Red) lobster

Beyonce’s new song “Formation,” which you’ve probably heard by now on the radio, from a passing car or on the Super Bowl Halftime Show, has been a highly talked-about song since it was released last week. There have been protests, counter-protests and seemingly endless essays about what it means.

But the most surprising reaction was the bump in business for Red Lobster. According to CNN, the restaurant chain saw a 33 percent bump in sales Sunday over the previous year, and Red Lobster was trending on Twitter for the first time in the company’s history.

We can’t actually publish the line in question, where Beyonce sings about bringing her guy to Red Lobster as a reward for sex, but you can hear it at around the 3-minute mark in the video below:

Of course, we don’t know if people are ordering lobster at the chain, which doesn’t have a restaurant north of Connecticut. In addition to the standard lobster dinner and a “Bar Harbor Lobster Bake,” it has all manner of shrimp, fish and shellfish on the menu, including something called langostino, which it apparently uses as a lobster substitute in its bisque. No wonder it doesn’t have any Maine restaurants anymore.

The big question for us is, why Red Lobster? Beyonce and Jay-Z have an estimated combined net worth of about $1 billion. Why not pay a little extra and treat Jay to McLaughlin’s Seafood Shack in Bangor, or Testa’s or Stewman’s in Bar Harbor, or the Lobster Pound in Lincolnville? Beyonce, if you’re reading this, there are a hundred places in Maine to get better, fresher Maine lobster.
