Mainers Christian and Sarah Matzke have great fun making their Christmas cards every year, usually picking an interesting — sometimes obscure — theme.
(There’s almost certainly a whole separate post to be written about all of their creative cards over the years, so stay tuned…)
The Matzkes’ 2014 card featured their four-person family as characters from the acclaimed early 1990s television show “Twin Peaks,” a cult classic some credit with launching a new golden age of high-quality TV — paving the way for subsequent serial dramas like “The Sopranos” and “Breaking Bad.”
“We have fun brainstorming throughout the year,” Christian told me. “As longtime ‘Twin Peaks’ fans, it felt like a great fit.”
Christian looms tall in the Christmas card as the mysterious Giant of “Twin Peaks,” while Sarah is the quasi-clairvoyant “Log Lady,” Margaret Lanterman.
The kids are the dwarf-like Man From Another Place and dark-suited FBI agent Dale Cooper — who in the show was sent to the eerie small town of Twin Peaks, Washington, to investigate a murder.
The response was belated, but as the Matzkes were undoubtedly conjuring up ideas for this year’s Christmas card, they got a big vote of confidence on their previous work.
Actor Kyle MacLachlan — Agent Cooper — caught wind of the “Twin Peaks”-themed card and gave it four thumbs up on Facebook, writing “Looks sharp!”
