There are a lot of petitions asking for LePage to be removed from office

Gov. Paul LePage has drawn ire for plenty of his decisions, and in some instances the anger has turned to action in the form of petitions to impeach him. The petitions may be symbolic, but they offer a gauge of public opinion.

There are several petitions alone on moveon.org asking people to show their support for LePage’s resignation or impeachment.

This petition calls for LePage’s impeachment for “using his executive powers to circumvent the will of the people of Maine.” It references how Democratic House Speaker Mark Eves was fired from a job at Good Will-Hinckley after LePage threatened to cut state funding for the school if Eves wasn’t let go. The petition has 19,294 signatures with a goal to reach 20,000.

This petition provides a place for signatures in the wake of LePage saying he’d resign if enough people asked him to. It has 1,066 signatures with a goal of 2,000.

A similar petition, with 433 signatures, builds on the same claim from LePage, who said in an interview: “If the people of Maine want me, I’ll do the job. If they don’t want me, just ask me to leave. You don’t have to impeach me … So far, I’ve only got four people write me that wanted me to resign.”

There’s another petition referencing the same quote with 3,933 signatures, and another one on change.org with 2,311 signatures. Plus, there’s a Facebook group with nearly 4,000 likes calling for his impeachment.

Here are a couple other petitions. If we missed any, put the links in the comments.

Of course many governors face these types of petitions. Put “impeach governor” or “recall governor” in the search bar on change.org, and you get petitions to remove governors from office in Indiana, New York, Oklahoma, Florida, Texas, Illinois, Arizona, New Jersey and Rhode Island.
