Websites list a bunch of Maine stereotypes. Are they right about us?

In two Internet posts about a year apart, the websites Movoto and RantPlaces took their best shots stereotyping Mainers — essentially, “Here’s what the rest of the country thinks all Mainers are like.”

In the RantPlaces piece, posted last month, each of the 50 states was assigned what the website believed is the most prevalent stereotype of its residents.

For Maine? “They put lobster on everything,” RantPlaces reported succinctly. “Even the snow.”

The real estate blog Movoto went a step further, focusing a whole post to the subject of Maine stereotypes, titling the piece “10 Maine stereotypes that are completely accurate.”

Like RantPlaces, Movoto noted our access to great lobster, claiming one stereotype is that people here “are total seafood snobs.”

What else does Movoto say people think of Mainers? Well, other stereotypes in the website’s list of 10 include the assumption that we’re taciturn, and when we do speak, we leave out the Rs — you know, the whole “Bah Hahbah” thing.

We also love Moxie and L.L. Bean, and our garages are enormous (because we’ve all got ATVs, snowmobiles and pickup trucks to keep sheltered), according to Movoto.

Read the entire list, as well as the website’s explanations, here.

While no group of people can be painted with the exact same brush, there’s some truth behind how the rest of the country sees us. We do have great seafood and love our all-terrain vehicles, and while not everybody loves Moxie, it is beloved enough to warrant its own summer festival in Lisbon.

What do you think? Do they have us pegged, or are these websites way off in their stereotypes of Mainers? Leave your thoughts in the comments below or on Facebook.
