Vermont? A dog? See how the British label Maine on a map.

In a bit of self-deprecating humor, the folks over at BuzzFeed’s London office agreed to try and label the states on maps of America and post the results online.

This is the second straight Thanksgiving they’ve gone through the exercise, and it’s relatively safe to say most American states have not made big impressions on the English over the past year.

The good news? They all know where California is. And — this could be a point of pride for us Mainers — about half of them did, actually, know where Maine is.

That’s much better than most of America’s states, and it’s better than last year, when they only labeled Maine correctly on six of the 15 maps.

Only five maps had Montana correctly placed, for instance, and the stretch of the country from about Virginia west to Nevada was typically chaos.

See? Maine’s presence on the international stage is growing. Click here to see all 22 BuzzFeed maps this year.

Eleven of those maps have Maine — or “Main” — labeled correctly. The other 11 labeled our fair state one of the following:

  • New England
  • A dog (Yes, a dog.)
  • Lobsters
  • Vermont
  • Alaska
  • The Parent Trap (In fairness, the 1998 romantic comedy “The Parent Trap,” starring a young Lindsay Lohan, was set in part at a Maine camp.)
  • Nothing at all. (Maine was effectively left blank on five maps.)

Last year when BuzzFeed’s British staff filled out the maps? The nine maps (out of the total 15 posted) in which Maine was not labeled correctly used one of the following:

  • New Hampshire
  • New York State
  • Stephen King Country (Not “Maine,” but not completely wrong, either.)
  • Nothing at all — on six of the maps this time.
