Stephen Colbert takes LePage’s side (for laughs): ‘Maine is just one Octomom away from bankruptcy’

As you can see above, political humorist and faux conservative talk show host Stephen Colbert rushed to the defense of Republican Maine Gov. Paul LePage — in his typical tongue-in-cheek, deadpan sarcastic way — during last night’s episode of “The Colbert Report” on the cable channel Comedy Central.

After a rant about how the Democratic White House is refusing to publicize where in the country the federal government is placing the tens of thousands of Central American child immigrants who entered the country illegally, Colbert highlighted LePage’s recent complaint that eight of those children have been placed in Maine without the governor’s prior permission or knowledge.

Said Colbert with faux outrage:

Out of the 52,000 children in federal custody, Uncle Sam is unfairly saddling Maine with a whopping eight of them. Eight. Do you know what that means? That means when Maine goes out to dinner they will automatically be charged with a 15-percent gratuity for parties of eight or more.

Colbert, whose show featured a smiling LePage photograph and called the governor a “man trying to look grateful for a crappy gift,” went on to say that “Maine can’t afford eight kids”:

Folks, I never realized Maine was in such dire financial straits. They’re just one ‘Octomom‘ away from bankruptcy.

This is not the first time the popular Colbert has used Maine news to get some laughs. In March of 2013, he aired a segment on the disappearance of two buckets of scallop guts that were part of a Mount Desert Island scientific study and went missing.

Two years earlier, Colbert was again offering his kind-of support for LePage when the governor famously ordered the removal of a mural depicting the history of the labor movement from the walls of the Department of Labor. In 2009, he had Democratic U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, on as a guest. For a reminder, here’s the mural clip below:
